Hawkins County School District, also known as Hawkins County School System or Hawkins County Schools (HCS), is a school district headquartered in Rogersville, Tennessee. [ 1 ] The district includes most areas in Hawkins County , with the exceptions of portions in Kingsport (which are in Kingsport City Schools ).
Cherokee High School was founded in 1980 after the Hawkins County Board of Education had determined in the mid-1970s that it would be more cost effective for the school system to construct and operate two comprehensive high schools rather than the four community-based high schools it was then operating.
In 1992 a member of the parent-teacher organization of the school asked for more support from the county board of trustees, arguing the school had been "benignly neglected". [2] The current Clinch School building opened in 2010. It was to be built for $9,800,000, but the district saved money, instead spending $9,550,000. [6]

Hawkins County Courthouse, ca. 1835–36, is situated at the center of Rogersville.Still in use, it is the second oldest courthouse in Tennessee. [9]In 1775, the grandparents of Davy Crockett, a future member of the United States Congress from Tennessee and hero of the Alamo, settled in the Watauga colony in the area in what is today Rogersville near the spring that today bears their name.
