The Aeritalia G.222 (formerly Fiat Aviazione, later Alenia Aeronautica) is a medium-sized STOL military transport aircraft.. It was developed to meet a NATO Basic Military Requirement 4; accordingly, it was originally designed with lift engines for a V/STOL capability, but these were never fitted to production aircraft.
The Alenia C-27J Spartan [3] is a military transport aircraft developed and manufactured by Leonardo's Aircraft Division (formerly Alenia Aermacchi until 2016). [4] It is an advanced derivative of the former Alenia Aeronautica's earlier G.222 (C-27A Spartan in U.S. service), equipped with the engines and various other systems also used on the larger Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules.
In 1995, Alenia and Lockheed Martin began discussions to improve Alenia's G.222 utility transport aircraft using C-130J's glass cockpit and a more powerful version of the G.222's T64G engine and four-blade propellers.
Aeritalia was created during 1969 by the merger of Aerfer and Fiat Aviazione's aviation businesses. With the US DOD's selection of the C-27J in the JCA contest on June 13, I have created the Alenia C-27J article. With the exception of the Lead paragraph and specs, most of the content is lifted whole from the Alenia G.222 page. Given the announcement, the page could draw some interest in the next few days.
