The International Airports Authority of India successfully completed the construction of Hulhule Airport, which was formally inaugurated, on 11 November 1981, under a new name of "Malé International Airport". Maldives Airports Company Ltd (MACL) was formed on 1 January 1994 to operate and manage the Malé International Airport.
The airport is at an elevation of 2 metres (6 ft 7 in) above mean sea level. It has one runway which is 2,200 metres (7,218 ft) in length and 40 metres (131 ft) wide. [4] The airport can accommodate six jets at any one time. The airport includes a passenger terminal and a VIP lounge, and is managed and maintained by the national airline Maldivian.
The airport was built entirely on 63 hectares of reclaimed land and features a runway of 1,800 metres allowing it to accommodate Dash-8 and ATR-72 aircraft [2] as well as large private jets. Dhaalu Airport is the first airport in Maldives to make extensive use of solar airfield lighting. [3]
