At the start of the 2014–15 season the UConn men's ice hockey program moved to the XL Center as a condition of its joining Hockey East. [27] In September 2018, the UConn Board of Trustees approved a plan to build a new 2,500-seat arena with 500 seat-backs in Storrs with the option to expand to 3,500 seats if necessary.
The Huskies used the larger XL Center in nearby Hartford, Connecticut as a stop-gap measure while they decided on a permanent, on-campus solution. In 2021, the athletic department settled on building a new rink across from the Ice Forum which was scheduled to be completed in time for the start of the 2022–23 season . [ 3 ]
Since then, UConn has used the XL Center, a former NHL venue in downtown Hartford, as its primary men's home. While the arena has a hockey capacity of 15,635, UConn has capped ticket sales at 8,089. Select home games have also been played at the Total Mortgage Arena in Bridgeport. UConn opened a new on-campus arena for the 2023–24 season.

The Huskies men's ice hockey program began in 1960 under head coach John Chapman. UConn began NCAA competition at the NCAA Division III level in the ECAC East. [4] Prior to 1998, the Huskies played all home games outdoors at a partially enclosed rink on-campus near Memorial Stadium. The UConn Hockey Rink had a roof but was open on the sides. [5]
The 2024–25 UConn Huskies men's ice hockey season will be the 65th season of play for the program, the 27th at the Division I level, and the 11th in Hockey East.The Huskies will represent the University of Connecticut in the 2024–25 NCAA Division I men's ice hockey season, play their home games at the Toscano Family Ice Forum and be coached by Mike Cavanaugh in his 12th season.
