Graduate Program. The History Department began teaching graduate students about a century ago. Its program has usually been one of moderate size. Admission is competitive, with six to twelve students admitted each year.
The Doctoral Degree. Students will be admitted to the doctoral program only if they have first earned an M.A. degree in history at UK or at another institution. Advising. Upon admission to the program, each student is assigned a faculty advisor in the student’s general field of study.
Scholars investigate political, diplomatic, economic, social, cultural, intellectual, religious, and legal history, and the history of science and medicine. Their research spans the globe from the Americas to Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Faculty by Specialization. Faculty by Name.

Popkin's scholarly interests include the history of the French and Haitian revolutions, autobiographical literature and American Jewish history. His newest book is Zelda Popkin: The Life and Times of an American Jewish Woman Author (Rowman and Littlefield, 2023).
From ancient carved inscriptions to modern newspapers, historians examine the sources of past cultures in order to explore the ways in which human beings express their understanding of the world around them, and how they try to make sense of the events that affect their times.
Funding for History Graduate Students. Funding support is an essential part of any History graduate program. Our department is committed to supporting its students with assistantships, fellowships, travel and research awards, summer work opportunities, and public history employment.
We are working together to excel in teaching and scholarship of history that connects to our local and global communities. History is home to 30 faculty and 1 staff member. We have about 250 undergraduate majors and minors, and about 50 graduate students between the M.A. and Ph.D. programs.
