At the mall's opening, anchor stores included JCPenney, Sears, Miller & Rhoads and Thalhimer's. Besides the addition of a food court in 1987, the mall remained largely unchanged. [3] After Miller & Rhoads closed in 1990, Hecht's bought the location, along with three other former Miller & Rhoads stores in Virginia, and converted it to a Hecht's. [4]
The mall was, at the time, the largest shopping center west of Richmond, measuring at 658,000 square feet of gross leasable area with 4,000 parking spaces. The mall's interior contained dark parquetry floors, tinted glass, modern lighting, and three large fountains.
Soon, Chesterfield Towne Center was the largest mall in Richmond. In September 2006, the Hecht's store rebranded as Macy's. May 2008, both of the Dillard's stores closed. A Barnes & Noble bookstore filled the space left vacant by the mall's theater complex in June 2008, relocating from a freestanding store across Huguenot Road. [7]
