Mahagadhimai (Nepali: महागढीमाई) is a new municipality in Bara District, named after the temple of goddess Gadhimai. Nepal, composed of Bariyarpur, Ganjbhawanipur, Patrahati, Babuaayen, Malhani, Dahiyaar, Bagdampur, Kawahi Madhuri (Kawahijabdi), Telkuwa, Dharampur, Inarwa, Benauli, that was announced by the Government of Nepal in 2014. Gadhimai Temple (Nepali: गढीमाई मन्दिर) is a Hindu temple of Gadhimai Devi, an aspect of Kali, the Hindu goddess of power. The temple is situated in Mahagadhimai Municipality in Bara District of south central Nepal, [1] though the term usually refers to Gadhimai festival, conducted at the Gadhimai temple area in central Terai of Nepal.
Gadhimai festival is a Hindu festival held every five years in Nepal at the Gadhimai Temple of Bariyarpur, in Bara District, about 160 kilometres (99 mi) south of the capital Kathmandu, and about 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) east of the city of Kalaiya, near the Indo-Nepal border.
Along with other major criteria as mentioned in Local Governance Act 2017 of Nepal, the number of population to be considered as the municipality: the minimum population in mountainous district should be 10,000 while hilly districts, inner terai districts, terai districts, and Kathmandu valley should include forty thousand, fifty thousand, seventy thousand and one hundred thousand respectively.
Bara District (Nepali: बारा जिल्ला Listen ⓘ) is one of the seventy–seven districts of Nepal, located in the western part of the Madhesh Province.The district is third richest district in Nepal after Kathmandu and Morang with 3.3% share of total GDP of Nepal and highest per capita income in Madhesh province.

Bariyarpur was a town and Village Development Committee in Bara District but now it is converted into municipality in the Narayani Zone of south-eastern Nepal.At the time of the 2001 Nepal census it had a population of 10000 persons residing in 1250 individual households.
Gadhimai is a former independent municipality in Bara District in of south-eastern Nepal that was merged into Jeetpur Simara Sub-Metropolitan City on 10 March 2017. It was itself established on 18 May 2014 by merging Pipara Simara, Jitpur Bhawanipur, Chhata Pipra, Phattepur, Dumbarwana Village Development Committees.
