Granville County and St. John's Parish were established on June 28, 1746, from the upper part of Edgecombe County. Granville County Schools is a PK–12 graded school district serving Granville County, North Carolina. Its 15 schools serve approximately 6,627 students as of the 2022- 2023 school year. The system was formed in 1963 from the merger of the former Granville County Schools and Oxford City schools.

Born in the eastern part of Granville County (which is now Warren County) in the Province of North Carolina, Alston moved to South Carolina after the Revolutionary War and settled near Greens Mill, which soon became the town of Greenville, South Carolina.
