A teaching hospital is an institutional facility responsible for providing medical training to students and graduates of medical schools. [1] These hospitals are usually affiliated with a university or medical school.
Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) is a tertiary hospital established in 1961 and is located in Idi-Araba, Surulere, Lagos State, the administrative division of Nigeria. [1] The teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Lagos College of Medicine established in 1962.
The hospital was established in 1955 from a small cottage health centre by the Old western region. The hospital was later redesigned entirely post independence by Onafowokan Michael Olutusen in the year 1972, it was named Ikeja general hospital. The hospital, initially named the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in 1956 was also instrumental in treating wounded soldiers and civilians of the Nigerian Civil war of 1967-1970. The hospital was handed over to the Lagos State Government in 1975 and subsequently the Federal Government in 1979. [3] [4] [5]

Federal Medical Centres (FMCs), were established nationwide in states that do not have Federal University Teaching Hospitals present. The exception to this rule is Lagos State, [3] which has one such centre in addition to a Teaching Hospital.
