Barry Hill Palmer (born November 10, 1937) is an American aeronautical engineer (UC Berkeley, 1961), inventor, builder and pilot of the first hang glider based on the Rogallo wing or flexible wing. Palmer also designed, built and flew the first weight-shift ultralight trike aircraft.
The commercial availability of Dickenson's hang glider made the Rogallo wing very popular, and prompted several builders during the 1970s to attempt motorization of their flexible-wing aircraft [31] but unlike Barry Palmer – who placed the center of gravity well below the keel – most builders were mounting the engine to the wing, where a ...
Since the 1960s flexible wings have dominated hang glider and ultralight aircraft designs, with such types as the delta-shaped Rogallo wing and the fully collapsible paraglider. More recently, the advent of high-strength flexible materials and other advanced technologies has renewed interest in the use of flexing for control purposes.
Hang glider just after launch from Salève, France. Hang gliding is an air sport or recreational activity in which a pilot flies a light, non-motorised, fixed-wing heavier-than-air aircraft called a hang glider. Most modern hang gliders are made of an aluminium alloy or composite frame covered with synthetic sailcloth [1] to form a wing.
1960 The 13-year-old Tony Prentice built a framed flexible-wing bi-conical hang glider with tether control system. 1961. Fleep. Powered flexible wing aircraft design & manufacture begins. 1961–62. First documented foot-launch with a Rogallo flex-wing hang glider: Barry Hill Palmer, California, US. Hang glider inspired from a photo of NASA's ...
