Slate is found in the Arctic and was used by Inuit to make the blades for ulus. China has vast slate deposits; in recent years its export of finished and unfinished slate has increased. Deposits of slate exist throughout Australia, with large reserves quarried in the Adelaide Hills in Willunga, Kanmantoo, and the Mid North at Mintaro and Spalding.
The slate deposits in this region of northern Spain are over 500 million years old, having formed during the Palaeozoic period. The colour and texture of the slate produced is largely dependent upon the tectonic environment, the source of the sedimentary material from which the slate is comprised, and the chemical and physical conditions ...
The Kate Brook Slate Formation (a.k.a. Tavy Formation) outcrops is of Frasnian to Famennian age and consists of greenish-grey and black slates representing an outer shelf facies. These rocks are found along the southwestern margin of the park from Tavistock southwards and on the southeastern margin south from Ashburton.
These rocks are found in isolated areas in the northwest, central, eastern and southeastern Bosnia and are made up of metapsammite, metapelite and smaller amounts of volcanic and carbonate rock. The Southeastern Paleozoic Zone comprises phyllite, schistose metasandstone and crystalline limestone, overlain by slate and more phyllite.

These slate deposits were estimated to be 4,000 meters in thickness and ran for about 150 kilometers from the northwest to southeast direction. [16] It was estimated, through observations of well-developed eyes of arthropod and vertebrate specimens recovered from the slate formation, that the water depth of the offshore environment was ...
