Madison County is a county located in the U.S. state of Idaho. As of the 2020 census, the population was 52,913. [1] The county seat and largest city is Rexburg. [2] Madison County is part of the Rexburg, Idaho micropolitan area, which is also included in the Idaho Falls metropolitan area.
The Idaho Territory was organized in March 1863, and Owyhee County was the first county in the territory to be organized, in December of that year. Oneida County was organized in January 1864, while Missoula County was adopted the same month, before becoming part of the new Montana Territory in May.
Thornton (originally called Texas Siding) is an unincorporated community in Madison County, Idaho, United States, [1] [2] that was founded in 1917. [3]Thornton was named in honor of William Ezra Thornton, who had been prominent in the establishment of the townsite, and who also was for a time Thornton's postmaster.
