Essex Fells is a borough in Essex County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey.As of the 2020 United States census, the borough's population was 2,244, [8] an increase of 131 (+6.2%) from the 2010 census count of 2,113, [18] [19] which in turn had reflected a decline of 49 (−2.3%) from the 2,162 counted in the 2000 census.
The Shady Rest Golf and Country Club is located at 820 Jerusalem Road in the Township of Scotch Plains in Union County, New Jersey. Established in 1921, it was one of the first, if not the first, African American country clubs in the United States. [ 4 ]
A nine-hole course was completed in 1895 and extended to 18 holes in 1897, designed by Alex Findlay. In 1900, Essex County hosted a meeting which included representatives from 10 New Jersey clubs and resulted in the birth of the New Jersey State Golf Association.
