Called "The Quarterdeck of the Navy" since it opened in July 1911, RTC Great Lakes has been the service's only enlisted basic training location since 1994, when the Recruit Training Command in Orlando, Florida, was closed under the BRAC process. The similar RTC San Diego, California, was closed the previous year.

The Base Realignment and Closure Commission of 1993 resulted in the closure of Naval Training Center San Diego, California and Naval Training Center Orlando, Florida, their associated Recruit Training Commands, and the consolidation of US Navy enlisted recruit training to Great Lakes.

Live Oak & Gulf was merged with Suwannee & San Pedro Railroad (S&SP) on June 30, 1905 to form Florida Railway. The Florida Railway operated the line to Luraville and the original 9 miles (14.5 km) of the former LO&G for the next eleven years until the line was closed in 1916 and the rails were lifted.
