Austin Country Club is a private golf club in the southern United States, located in Austin, Texas. Established 126 years ago in 1899, the club moved to its third and present site in 1984, a challenging layout designed by noted course architect Pete Dye .

The following is a partial list of golf courses designed by Pete Dye. [1] He is credited with designing more than 200 courses internationally during his lifetime. [2] In 1982, Sports Illustrated wrote that Dye had a reputation for transforming "unpromising" land into picturesque and challenging golf courses, that required a style of play called "target golf".
Dye received the Old Tom Morris Award in 2003 from the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, their highest honor.In 2004, he was the recipient of the PGA Distinguished Service Award, the highest annual honor of the PGA of America, which recognizes individuals who display leadership and humanitarian qualities, including integrity, sportsmanship and enthusiasm for the game of golf.
Another early resident was Lewis Hancock, for whom the neighborhood was named. Hancock was mayor of Austin from 1895 to 1897 and also founded the Austin Country Club and Golf Course in the area in 1899. After the turn of the century, formal neighborhoods were planned in the North University area, which it was called at the time.
From 1971 on Penick continued teaching at the club, serving as "Professional Emeritus" until his death in 1995. Penick was the golf coach at the University of Texas from 1931 to 1963, coaching the Longhorns to 21 Southwest Conference championships in 33 years, including 20 out of 23 seasons from 1932 to 1954 (1932–38; 1940–47; 1949–52; 1954).
