Ke-mo sah-bee (/ ˌ k iː m oʊ ˈ s ɑː b iː /; often spelled kemo sabe, kemosabe or kimosabe) is the term used by the fictional Native American sidekick Tonto as the "Native American" name for the Lone Ranger in the American Lone Ranger radio program and television show.
Tonto recognizes the ranger as someone who had saved him when they were both boys. He refers to him by the title "ke-mo sah-bee", explaining that the phrase means "faithful friend" (radio series) or "trusty scout" (television series) in the language of his tribe. In the 2013 film, Tonto translates the word as meaning "wrong brother".
"Ke-mo sah-bee", Tonto's greeting to the masked Ranger, was derived from the name of a boys' camp owned by Jewell's father-in-law Charles W. Yeager. Camp Kee-Mo-Sah-Bee operated from 1911 until 1941 on Mullet Lake south of Mackinac, Michigan. After the radio show became popular, Yeager held "Lone Ranger Camps" at his camp. [4] [5]
In a flashback, Tonto told of a young Reed who nursed him back to health after his village was shot up. Tonto gave him the name Kemo Sabe, which he said meant "Trusty Scout," and slipped a ring on his finger. The insignia on the ring matched the insignia on Reed's medallion.
