In certain states, a court reporter is a notary, by virtue of their state licensing, and a notary public is authorized to administer oaths to witnesses and certify that their transcript of the proceedings is a verbatim account of what was said—unlike a court recorder, whose job is to operate audio recording devices and send the recorded files for transcription over the internet.

West's National Reporter System (NRS) is a set of case law reporters for federal courts and appellate state courts in the United States. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] It started with the North Western Reporter in 1879 which has its origin in The Syllabi (1876, LCCN 2010-213400 ).
The first edition was published in 1891 by West Publishing, with the full title A Dictionary of Law: containing definitions of the terms and phrases of American and English jurisprudence, ancient and modern, including the principal terms of international constitutional and commercial law, with a collection of legal maxims and numerous select titles from the civil law and other foreign systems.
