Aleksandr Ilyich Ulyanov (Russian: Алекса́ндр Ильи́ч Улья́нов; 12 April [O.S. 31 March] 1866 – 20 May [O.S. 8 May] 1887) [1] was a Russian revolutionary and political activist who was executed for planning an assassination against Alexander III of Russia.

Lenin was born Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov in Streletskaya Ulitsa, Simbirsk, now Ulyanovsk, on 22 April 1870, and baptised six days later; [2] as a child he was known as Volodya, the common nickname variant of Vladimir. [3] He was the third of eight children, having two older siblings, Anna (born 1864) and Alexander (born 1866).
Ilya's mother, Anna Alexeyevna Smirnova (1793–1871), was half-Kalmyk, half-Russian and the daughter of city-dweller Alexei Lukyanovich Smirnov, a son of Lukyan Smirnov. Nikolai married 30-year-old Anna in 1823. Ilya had three sisters and a brother. [5] Ulyanov graduated from Kazan University's Department of Physics and Mathematics in 1854.

Ulyanova was the sister of Vladimir Ulyanov (Lenin), Maria Ilyinichna Ulyanova, Anna Ulyanova, Aleksandr Ulyanov, and Dmitry Ilyich Ulyanov. She was the closest to Lenin out of all of her siblings. [2] [3] Ulyanova was baptized in the Russian Orthodox faith on 9 November 1871 at the Tikhvin Monastery of the Dormition of the Mother of God. [1]
