David W. Butler High School (commonly referred to as " Butler ") was established in 1997 and is located in Matthews, North Carolina, United States. Butler's campus is 74 acres (300,000 m 2). The mascot is the bulldog and school colors are black, red and silver. Its boundary includes [2] most of Matthews, [3][4] and a portion of Mint Hill.

Matthews is located at 35°7′1″N 80°42′59″W (35.116851, −80.716409). [3] According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 17.2 square miles (45 km 2), all land. Matthews is situated approximately 11 miles (18 km) southeast of uptown Charlotte.

The school's colors are purple and gold. The school dropped its mascot, a Native American chief head, in 2001 because it was deemed offensive. The school's students at that time voted not to replace the mascot but still called the Purple Raiders. Bloomington High School participates in the Big 12 Conference (Illinois).
