In their inaugural season, the Vigilantes finished last in the South division at 39-51, but drew 92,960 fans, third-most in the eight-team league, despite playing out of a makeshift ballpark set up on the campus of Saddleback College. A 4,500-seat ballpark was proposed at a cost of $6 million scheduled to open in 1998.
The league plays in cities that do not have Major League Baseball or Minor League Baseball teams and is not affiliated with either. The Pecos League season is a highly condensed one. Schedules vary, but teams have played as many as 70 games in 72 days, or 80 games in three months.
The growth of youth baseball had created conflicts for fans. The NCAA had put restrictions on the league, while at the same time, major league teams were reexamining player development resources. The four league teams remaining in the final 1973 season were the Chamberlain Mallards, Pierre Cowboys, Rapid City Chiefs and Sturgis Titans.
