Yerwada Central Jail is a noted high-security prison in Yerwada, Pune in Maharashtra.This is the largest prison in the state of Maharashtra, and also one of the largest prisons in South Asia, housing over 5,000 prisoners (2017) spread over various barracks and security zones, besides an open jail just outside its premises.

The jail industry in India is governed by the Prisons Act, 1894, and the Prison Manual, which outline the rules and regulations for the operation of prisons. Inmates serving their sentences are expected to perform labour in the facility's workshops or industries.
After the district was renamed as Vijayapura, the jail is also renamed as the Central Prison, Vijayapura. It is the oldest prison complex in Karnataka [2] and one of the oldest jail buildings in India. It was built by Nawab Mustafa Khan in 1640, a noble of Mohammad Adil Shah. [1] Earlier, the jail served as an inn (sarai) for king's special guests.

Central Prison, Bengaluru (also called Bengaluru Central Jail and Parappana Agrahara Central Prison) is the largest prison in the Indian state of Karnataka. [1] Established in 1997, it became the central prison of Bengaluru in 2000 when the old jail, which has since been converted to Freedom Park , was shut for renovation.
