A titular bishop in various churches is a bishop who is not in charge of a diocese. By definition, a bishop is an "overseer" of a community of the faithful, so when a priest is ordained a bishop, the tradition of the Catholic , Eastern Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox churches is that he be ordained for a specific place.
Joseph N. Dinand, S.J. (December 3, 1869 – July 29, 1943) was an American-born bishop of the Catholic Church. He twice served as president at the College of the Holy Cross from 1911 to 1918 and from 1924 to 1927. He also served as the Vicar Apostolic of Jamaica from 1927 to 1929. Waltersheid was appointed auxiliary bishop of Pittsburgh with the titular see of California by Pope Benedict XVI on February 25, 2011. On March 11, 2011, Waltersheid was appointed as episcopal vicar for clergy and secretary for clergy. He was consecrated by Bishop David Zubik on April 25, 2011, at St. Paul's Cathedral in Pittsburgh. Philip Sulumeti (born 15 August 1937) is a Kenyan prelate of the Catholic Church who is the Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Kakamega since 5 December 2014. He served as the ordinary of the Diocese of Kakamega since his appointment as the founder bishop on 28 February 1978.
Recalled to the United States, he was named Bishop of Monterey-Fresno, California, on March 24, 1924. [3] He later resigned due to ill health on September 26, 1932; he was appointed Titular Bishop of Croae on the same date. [3] He retired to Killybegs, in his native County Donegal, where he died at age 98. [1]
