Cheat Lake is a 13-mile-long (21 km) reservoir on the Cheat River in Monongalia County, West Virginia, United States. [2] It was originally named Lake Lynn, but the Board on Geographic Names officially decided upon Cheat Lake as the reservoir's name in 1976. [1] Cheat Lake is located immediately downstream of the 10-mile-long (16 km) Cheat Canyon.

The forest is best known for its scenic overlooks of the Cheat River in Cheat Canyon. The main overlook is accessible by car and was developed as a CCC project. In 1772, the Dunkards, an Anabaptist religious sect, were the first Europeans to settle on Cheat River, lying within the canyon. Due to coal mining, poor forest management, and a private dam, fish were severely threatened near the lower end of this river, which was listed as the eighth most endangered river in the United States during the 1990s.
The land also provides access from the Coopers Rock State Forest trail system to Cheat Lake. The other 29.16 acres (11.80 ha) were first leased and then sold to Fred St. Clair in 1985 for recreational use. [1]
