The US standard symbols are outlined by the American National Standards Institute and the American Welding Society and are noted as "ANSI/AWS". [1] Due in part to the growth of the oil industry, this symbol set was used during the 1990s in about 50% of the world's welding operations. [1]
The American Welding Society (AWS) D 1.4 sets out the practices for welding rebar in the US. Without special consideration the only rebar that is ready to weld is W grade (Low-alloy — A706). Rebar that is not produced to the ASTM A706 specification is generally not suitable for welding without calculating the "carbon-equivalent".
In the USA, welder qualification is performed according to AWS D1.1, [1] ASME Section IX [2] and API 1104 [3] standards, which are also used in some other countries. Some States have their own Welder Qualifications that supersede AWS Qualifications, but most defer to AWS, ASME or API.
