MD 144 eastbound past MD 27 in Mount Airy MD 144 begins at an intersection with MD 27 (Ridge Road) just south of MD 27's interchange with I-70 south of Mount Airy. The Mount Airy– Westminster portion of MD 27 was built in the 1920s. MD 27 was reconstructed in the early to mid-1950s from Germantown to Westminster. MD 31 was reconstructed north of Westminster in the late 1950s; old segments of the highway became part of MD 852. MD 27 bypassed Mount Airy in the 1970s, leaving behind MD 808.

The road passes an eastbound weigh station and winds east, crossing over the railroad tracks before it reaches an eastbound truck rest area. I-70/US 40 comes to a partial cloverleaf interchange with MD 27 that serves the town of Mount Airy to the north, at which point it enters Carroll County.
