Spur 184 was designated on March 18, 1947, from FM 94 (later FM 2042, now FM 3468), 2 miles (3.2 km) west of Childress, to Childress Army Air Field as a replacement of a section of War Highway 16. On October 9, 1973, Spur 184 was cancelled and became a portion of FM 164.
On February 4, 1941, the section of SH 136 from the Moore–Potter county line to Stinnett was cancelled. On September 22, 1942, the route was extended east to Borger . The highway was extended to the Oklahoma state line on November 21, 1963, replacing most of FM 278 and all of FM 2216 .

Spur 1966 was designated on February 23, 2012, as Spur 73, but to avoid confusion, it was changed to Spur 1966 on March 29, 2012. The number was chosen to honor the NCAA championship won by the 1965–66 Texas Western Miners men's basketball team as the road passes the university (now known as The University of Texas at El Paso ).
