[1] The initial design of St. Joseph's church by Karel Pařík was based on the design for a neo-Romanesque church given to Archbishop Ivan Šarić by Pope Pius XI . Work began on the construction of church in 1936, and the building was consecrated on 31 March 1940.
According to the 1991 census, the municipality of Novi Grad had 136,746 citizens. Four years of the Bosnian War brought that number down tremendously, as the Serb minority left the city.
