On January 20, 2013, articulated buses started appearing on the B44, which initially ran both the local and limited variants. Effective November 17, 2013, the B44 Limited was converted to Select Bus Service (SBS), joining other SBS routes in New York City: the M15 and M34 in Manhattan and the Bx12 and Bx41 in the Bronx.
The B44 SBS route began in November 2013, replacing the B44 Limited service with Select Bus Service. Initially planned for the end of 2011, then later the summer of 2012, the start date was pushed to November 2013 as the buses for the service did not arrive until early 2013.

Routes in the following tables are operated by New York City Transit, except the B100 and B103 routes which are operated by MTA Bus Company. All routes operate local service only except the B6, B35, B38, B41, B49, and B103 which also have limited-stop service, as well as the B44, B46, and B82, which also have Select Bus Service.
In 2007, the MTA and the New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) proposed converting the Q5 Limited to Select Bus Service, the city's version of Bus Rapid Transit. The Q5 SBS would have run every 5 to 8 minutes, while no changes would be made to local service.
