According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 118.33 square miles (306.47 km 2), of which 112.38 square miles (291.06 km 2) is land and 5.95 square miles (15.4 km 2) (5.02%) water. The Michigan State Highway Department (MSHD) designated M-149 along a gravel road in late 1930; the highway provided access from US 2 northerly to Palms Book State Park. [2] [3] A second highway, the first creation of M-125, was formed later in 1931 along another gravel road to connect US 2 southerly with the Thompson State Fish Hatchery.
