Loktak Lake in December 2016 Loktak Lake, December 2016. Loktak Lake (Meitei: Loktak Pat [2] [3] [4]) is a freshwater lake in Northeast India. It is a pulsating lake, with a surface area varying from 250 km 2 to 500 km 2 during the rainy season with a typical area of 287 km 2. [5] The lake is located at Moirang in Manipur state, India. [6]
It is 40 km 2 (15.4 sq mi) in area, the only floating national park in the world, and an integral part of Loktak Lake. [1] [2] It is currently under the tentative lists of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, under the title "Keibul Lamjao Conservation Area (KLCA)", additionally covering the buffer of Loktak Lake (140 sq km) and Pumlen Pat (43 sq. km).
The test results indicated that water quality in the phumdi area was poor in the northern and southern zones of the lake; test results indicated low dissolved oxygen, [25] low pH (normal range for Loktak Lake is 6.3 to 8.2 [26]) high CO 2 and high Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) but the water quality was good in the open water area.
