  2. Cedar log and tree scales - The Forestry Forum

Cedar is totally different than hardwood. Best log is second log up the tree, not butt log usually. Best and highest value wood is heart wood , not the out side of tree. Remember knots no defect. Nebraska has lots of cedar. Part of the plains that has seen cedar grow by leaps and bounds since fire is not part of the landscape any more.

The gin pole is tied off at the top to four trees at 30'. Metal parts are only a few hundred to get made. THis one is nice with electric motors but manual would work fine too. (I am thinking of putting one up by my sawmill to load logs. Max

But buying logs for sawing and not using the lumber from those logs, would seem wasteful and counter-productive. Offering a custom service to saw up logs for the practice of sawing just makes good sense (to me, and prolly sells these customers on some mills like Arky suggests). Now, this is the way I am reading what WM is doing.

  9. Best red oak log ever - forestryforum.com

    www.forestryforum.com/board/index.php?topic=68067.0

Congrats!!! I had a few real nice red oak logs last month that I tried quarter sawing but the darn wood was literally splitting as I was cutting it. Each quarter board warped so severely that I threw it all into the firewood pile. Was the first time I tried milling much red oak, especially any big clear ones.

If it won't roll, its not a log; it's still a tree. Sawmills cut logs, not trees. Kiln drying wood: When the cookies are burned, they're burned, and you can't fix them. Sawing is fun for the first couple million boards. Be smarter than the sawdust
