Monterosso is a small town overrun by tourists in the summer months. The village was briefly excluded from the Cinque Terre trail in 1948, but was re-introduced in mid-1949.
The predominant crops in the area have been grapes and olives. Some fishermen were based in Monterosso, but the area's gaily painted fishermen's cottages were conceived in the late 1970s as a tourist attraction. Because of its exceptional cultural and ecological assets, UNESCO added Cinque Terre to its list of World Heritage Sites in 1997. [3]
