The first Nebraska "State" Fair occurred while Nebraska was still a U.S. territory, from September 21–23, 1859 in Nebraska City. [2] Another event wasn't held until October 7–9, 1868, by which time Nebraska had become a state. The fair was again held in Nebraska City in 1869, before moving to Brownville in 1870 and 1871.
More than 1,100 properties and districts in Nebraska are on the National Register of Historic Places. Of these, 20 are National Historic Landmarks. Shew was married twice. In 1847 he married Elizabeth Marie Studley (1819-1889) in Boston; their daughter Theodora Alice was born in 1848. After Elizabeth's death from typhoid in 1889, [3] Shew and Annie Katherine Haven (1849-1930) were married in San Francisco in 1891. Shew died in San Francisco on 5 February 1903. [7]
