Originally, a thinned mane was considered easier to keep free of dirt, burrs, and out of the way of the rider, and thus worth the time and upkeep of regular thinning. To make it more comfortable for the horse, a groom should pull the mane out of the crest in an upwards direction, rather than sideways or down.
