Archaeology is distinct from palaeontology, which is the study of fossil remains. Archaeology is particularly important for learning about prehistoric societies, for which, by definition, there are no written records. Prehistory includes over 99% of the human past, from the Paleolithic until the advent of literacy in societies around the world. [1]
Mark Paul Leone [1] (1940-2024) was an American archaeologist and professor of anthropology at the University of Maryland, College Park. He was interested in critical theory as it applies to archaeology and, particularly, to historical archaeology. He directed Archaeology in Annapolis project from 1981 to his death.
He is a Contributing Editor to Archaeology Worldwide, [4] American Archaeology and Discover Archaeology magazines, and formerly wrote a regular column for Archaeology Magazine. He serves on the Editorial Boards of six academic and general periodicals and has many popular magazine credits, including Scientific American and Gentleman's Quarterly .
Archaeology is the study of human activity in the past, primarily through the recovery and analysis of the material culture and environmental data that they have left behind, which includes artifacts, architecture, biofacts (also known as eco-facts) and cultural landscapes (the archaeological record).

Kafafi holds a B.A. and M.A. from the University of Jordan (1971, 1977) and a Ph.D. from the Free University Berlin (1982). [1]He joined Yarmouk University's faculty in the eighties, first in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences and then as a founding member of the Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology, becoming full professor thereafter, in 1993.
