The county is named for Judge Theodore W. Brevard, an early settler, and state comptroller, and was originally named St. Lucie County until 1855. The official county seat has been located in Titusville since 1894, although most of the county's administration is performed from Viera .
The highway is the northernmost county route in Brevard County, located only 1 mi (1.6 km) from the Volusia county line. [9] The route is a super two directly in front of the diamond interchange with I-95, which then condenses to an undivided two-lane road for the remainder of its existence. While short, the speed limit is 45 mph. [10]

Newnansville was the county seat of Alachua County from 1828 to 1832. In 1832, it became the county seat of Columbia County. Susannah at Fort Pierce was the county seat of St. Lucie County (renamed Brevard County in 1855) from 1844 to 1864. When a new county named St. Lucie County was established in 1905, Fort Pierce was named the county seat.
