Speedway Motorsports, LLC is an American company that owns and manages auto racing facilities that host races sanctioned by NASCAR, NHRA, World of Outlaws and other racing series. The company was founded by Bruton Smith and has its headquarters at Charlotte Motor Speedway, in Concord, North Carolina, just north of Charlotte.
Speedway started in 1952 as Speedway 79, the name of a fuel chain based in Michigan.Unlike other fuel station chains at the time, Speedway 79 did not have a service station to perform vehicle maintenance, but rather vending machines that focused on cigarette and soft drink sales, giving their locations the nickname "Smokes and Cokes".
In 2017, Shelby Development, LLC purchased National Trail Raceway from the NHRA. The company also owns Heartland Motorsports Park in Kansas, which they acquired in 2015. [2] The following year, Jay Livingston became general manager and co-owner of the track. In 2019, Big Ambitions, LLC purchased the property from Shelby Development, LLC.
