Built in 1839, the depot is the second oldest surviving B&O depot. Only the Ellicott City Station in Ellicott City, Maryland is older.

It operated as B&O from 1830 until 1987, when it was merged into the Chessie System; its lines are today controlled by CSX Transportation.

It was built in 1887, by the Huntington and Big Sandy Railroad, later the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad.
