St John Bosco High School was originally founded in 1978 at the initiative of the parishioners of St John Bosco Parish, Engadine, as a systemic Years 7 - 10 school under the administration of the Salesians of Don Bosco. The school was built after many years of planning and effort by the Parish Priest, John Briffa SDB, and a group of parishioners.
Several institutions in Engadine, New South Wales, were also named for Bosco, including St John Bosco Parish, St John Bosco Primary School, and St John Bosco College. Bosco was the subject of the 1935 biopic Don Bosco, directed by Goffredo Alessandrini, and was played by the actor Gian Paolo Rosmino.
