Salem is an unincorporated community located in the northeastern portion of the township at It was first settled as early as 1825 when John and Joseph Dickinson moved to the area. A post office opened on June 4, 1831 under the name Rider's after its first postmaster Ira Rider.
Entrance to Salem Walker Cemetery. The first settlers in Salem Township arrived in 1825. [3] The first burial in the Salem Walker Cemetery took place in 1834. [2] The congregation of the Salem Methodist Episcopal Church formed in the mid-19th century, and met at various places in the township until the 25 members constructed a church adjacent to the cemetery in 1864.
