King Edward Medical College was established in 1860 as the Lahore Medical College. It is the fifth oldest medical school in South Asia , after Medical College Kolkata (January 28, 1835), Madras Medical College , Chennai (February 2, 1835) Grant Medical College , Bombay (1845) and Sarojini Naidu Medical College Agra (1854).
Provincial medical entrance exams included the MDCAT conducted by the University of Health Sciences, Lahore in Punjab and Balochistan before the NMDCAT. It was implemented in 1998 as the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) on the initiative of the then chief minister of Punjab Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif to counter replete cheating in HSSC exams at the time.
It regulates and coordinates the activities of medical education, training and research institutions throughout Punjab. It also conducts Medical and Dental College Admission Test (also known as MDCAT) every year for admission in MBBS and BDS degree programs in public and private medical and dental colleges of Punjab.
The university was established in 1974 as Rawalpindi Medical College. It was initially affialited with the University of the Punjab, Lahore, Pakistan. In 2003, it became affiliated with the University of Health Sciences, Lahore. In May 2017, this college was upgraded to university status by the Government of Punjab, Pakistan. [4]
