The Bellows School, also known as the Bellows Avenue Elementary School, is a historic school building in the Franklinton neighborhood of Columbus, Ohio. The building was constructed for the Columbus Public School District in 1905, designed by local architect David Riebel and built by George Bellows Sr. The elementary school operated until 1977 ...
The school celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1942 with a reunion event for alumni. [6] In 1967, a crude fire bomb was thrown into the school building, though it detonated without serious damage. [7] In 2012, the vacant school building was put up for sale. [8] It was purchased for $300,000 by the A+ Arts Academy, a charter school, in 2013. [9] [2]
Medary Elementary School closed in 2007 amid declining enrollment. At the time, the school served only 140 students, fewer than any other traditional elementary school in the district. A crowning achievement of the district was the opening, during the 1970–1971 school year, of two new high schools: Westland High School and Grove City High School. These two buildings, planned to house two thousand students, were built in 1970-1971 at the amazing low cost of $18.98 per square foot, or a perpupil cost of $1,700.
The building was built as Columbus Public Schools' Reeb Avenue Elementary School, and was listed on the Columbus Register of Historic Properties in 2013. It was designed in the Neoclassical style by David Riebel, and was built from 1905 to 1907. [2] The building is now owned by the City of Columbus.
Avondale Elementary School was built at a time of significant population growth in Columbus. Following the American Civil War, an influx of new residents led the school board to construct new schools nearly every year. [1] The Avondale school was built from 1892 to 1893, toward the end of popularity for the Richardsonian Romanesque ...
