h2o Wireless is a United States-based prepaid cell phone service, that utilizes the AT&T network. [2] It is a brand of mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) Locus Telecommunications, a subsidiary of Telrite Holdings, Inc., since 2019. [1] [3] Locus was formerly a subsidiary of KDDI America corporation, starting in 2010.
Usage of prepaid cellphone service was common in most parts of the world. In 2012 around 70% of customers in Western Europe and China use prepaid phones with the figure rising to over 90% for customers in India and Africa. [17] 36% of cellphone users in the United States of America were using some form of prepaid service as of 2021. [18]
Apart from their main spectrum holdings across large regions in the country (listed below) the major US carriers (AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile & Verizon) also hold various Cellular Market Area (CMA) and/or Economic Area (EA) licenses for the AWS 1700 band, as well as Major Trading Area (MTA) and/or Basic Trading Area (BTA) licenses for the PCS 1900 band.
