No. It means lots that were forty feet wide. The depth is the half the depth of the block (less the alley if any).

I work in an office which is about 20,000 square feet, and it is attached to a factory which is about 60,000 square feet, and that is attached to the warehouse/shipping department which is about 20,000 square feet. So, without ever stepping outdoors I could "run an errand" by leaving my desk and walking to the shipping department.
