The Desert Eagle Pistol was conceived in 1979, when three people with an idea for creating a gas- operated, semi-automatic, magnum-caliber pistol founded Magnum Research, Inc. in St. Paul, Minnesota (USA). Early pistols, then known as Eagle 357, were announced in 1982
I really doubt that the DE 357 magnum will run on 38 Special ammo. The DE's I have seen don't like 357 magnum ammo, full power, with bullet weights less than 140 grains IIRC.
Which is just as well. I don't "need" another Desert Eagle. I recently wrote the following on another forum. It covers a few thing about the guns: I currently own two Desert Eagles, a MK-XIX with barrels in .357, .44, and 50, and the lightweight L5 in .357. And I previously owned a MK-I in .357.
I am guessing you haven't looked at Desert Eagle prices in a year or so... Magnum Research is swamped and has been since early 2020. They phased out 10" Barrels a few years ago... shortly afterwards, (mid 2019) the new caliber 429DE was released, and enough people asked about ten inch 429DE barrels they decided to make one run of them.
So I have been having some problems with a stainless steel .50AE Desert Eagle I bought. First of all, it seems the semi-auto does not work. Each time a shot is fired, I have to jiggle the safety level a little bit to release the trigger so I am able to fire a second shot.
I purchased a new Desert Eagle in March of this year. The package that I purchased was the one that came with the blued pistol, both 50 AE and 44 Mag barrels, and one magazine for each. The pistol has been having some serious issues since purchased. The pistol occasionally locks shut. It has done this with or without a round in the chamber.
So go shoot that thing. .357 in a Desert Eagle is soft-shooting. I have 3 Desert Eagles with barrels in 4 calibers, and I probably shoot the .357 the most. Also, there's lots of good info to be found on the Arfcom Desert Eagle forum.
A Desert Eagle in .41 Magnum is pretty rare, so it's a nice collector's piece. Depending on which version of the DE it is, you can also buy .357 Magnum and .50AE barrels for it. The current Desert Eagle can swap out all three calibers (plus one or two limited edition calibers) easily, but older DE's are either incapable of changing calibers or ...

I have a .50 cal Desert Eagle and I was cleaning it and put the barrel back in place. When I released the slide to let the bolt go forward into the chamber, it got completely stuck and I can not rack the slide back, no matter how much force I use, it absolutely will not budge.
