Gardenia is a genus of flowering plants in the coffee family, Rubiaceae, native to the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia, Madagascar, Pacific Islands, [1] and Australia. Gardenia volkensii is a multi-stemmed shrub or small tree with short, rigid branches. [1] [2] The branches form a dense rounded canopy and may touch the ground. The bark is a pale grey colour. [1] Shiny spoon-shaped leaves are found clustered at the end of knobbly branchlets. [2] The trumpet-shaped flowers start off white, but turn yellow with age.
The total population of G. brighamii is between 15 and 19 trees. There are only two plants in the wild on Oʻahu and one on the Big Island. [6] Major threats to the survival of this species include loss of dry forest habitat and the establishment of invasive species, such as fountain grass (Pennisetum setaceum).
Gardenia thunbergia was first introduced to Kew as early as 1773. It belongs to the very large family of Rubiaceae, which includes plants such as coffee (Coffea arabica), quinine and numerous ornamental trees and shrubs with showy flowers. It is considered a means of repelling witchcraft in Karanga traditional medicine. [6]
