On 8 July 1982, West Germany and France played in the semi-finals of the 1982 FIFA World Cup at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium in Seville, Spain. The match is known in both countries as the Night of Seville (German: Nacht von Sevilla, [1] French: Nuit de Séville [2]). The match was won by West Germany 5–4 on penalties.
After the death of Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán, who purchased the currently-rented land for the future stadium in 1937, it was his successor Ramón de Carranza, who laid the first stone of the same on 2 December 1956, replacing the ancient Nervión Stadium. It was inaugurated on 7 September 1958 with a friendly match Sevilla – Jaén (3–3).
