Warhammer 40,000: Darktide is a first-person action video game set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, developed and published by Fatshark. It is a spiritual successor to the Warhammer: Vermintide series. [1] It was released for Microsoft Windows on 30 November 2022.
Fatshark originated from a company called Northplay, [3] which subcontracted for various Swedish companies between 2003 and 2008. [4] The company is best known for its involvement with the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360, developing Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 and versions of their PC game Lead and Gold: Gangs of the Wild West for both.
BitSquid was sold to AutoDesk, and it seems AutoDesk have mostly discontinued it. Posters online (who aren't, naturally, reliable sources) claim Fatshark retained the rights to use and develop the engine for their own games, and that Darktide is "based on the same engine as Vermintide 2".
Bitsquid AB, the company that created the Bitsquid game engine, was founded in 2009 in Stockholm, Sweden, Niklas Frykholm and Tobias Persson, two engineers who had previously worked at game studio Grin, and by the owners of game developer Fatshark.
