The recently incorporated City of Maple Valley finalized the transfer of Lake Wilderness Park and the Arboretum from King County in January 2003.

The arboretum began when the 16.5 acres of land was gifted to Cora Hartshorn in 1923 by Stewart Hartshorn on undeveloped woodland of oaks, tulip trees, dogwood, and beech. She designed a system of roads and walking paths; by 1938 there were 3 miles (4.8 km) of paths. In 1958, Cora died, and she willed the arboretum to the township. [1]
The Bayard Cutting Arboretum farm was established in 2012. [29] It was the first Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program in the New York State park system. [30] The farm produces over 150 varieties of vegetables and berries and also grows culinary herbs and flowers. There are 150 hens providing eggs to members of the CSA program. [31]
