Waimate is a town in Canterbury, New Zealand, and the seat of Waimate District. It is situated just inland from the eastern coast of the South Island . The town is reached via a short detour west when travelling on State Highway One, the main North/South road.

Located roughly halfway between Timaru and Oamaru, Waimate is the major market and service town for the surrounding district, but when the Main South Line between Christchurch and Dunedin was constructed, it was built some 7 km to the east of the township so that it could follow a direct route along the coastal plain without deviating.

The council was established in 1989, replacing the Waimate County Council established in 1876. [3]In 2020, the council had 58 full time equivalent staff, [1] including nine earning more than $100,000. [4]
Studholme is situated on the coastal plains of the Waihao River and Waimate Creek, on the shores of the Pacific Ocean and Wainono Lagoon. Approximately seven kilometres west is Waimate, the largest town in the district. Other nearby localities include Hook to the north and Nukuroa and Willowbridge to the south.
